This section provides you with general configuration information for the IBM Administration Server, including how to change the configuration file. Links to related information appear at the end of this section.
The Apache Web server requires manual file configuration by the user. The IBM HTTP Server includes the IBM Administration Server as a separately installed component in the IBM HTTP Server directory. This setup enables you to configure the IBM HTTP Server with a point and click browser-based interface.
The Web server administrator configures the IBM HTTP Server by pointing a browser (at least Netscape V4.07, or Microsoft Internet Explorer V5.0) at the IBM Administration Server, installed on a different port from the IBM HTTP Server. For example, if you install the IBM HTTP Server at: http://anydomainname.com, you can install the IBM Administration Server at: http://anydomainname.com:8008.
After login, the opening screen of the IBM Administration Server shows a three-paned page consisting of a navigation pane on the left, a content pane on the right, and a small message pane at the top. By selecting a task in the navigation pane, such as Basic Settings > Core Settings, the administrator sees a form in the content pane with fields to complete.
The IBM Administration Server can make changes to the configuration file of the IBM HTTP Server without interrupting the running server. For example, to change the error log location for the IBM HTTP Server:
Each change made on a form in the IBM Administration Server interface applies to a specific set of resources, called a scope or container in the configuration file. Examples of a container include: a virtual host, a directory, a location, or the global container, which includes all resources. To indicate the set of resources to which the change should apply, click Scope and select a scope using the Scope window at the top of each form.
